Drought in Darfur is far worse than predicted
26 November 2009

In El Fasher this week I saw for myself the devastating affect of the failure of the rain in East Africa.   Hafirs are already dry, surface water has dried up and the water table has already dropped over 10 metres.  These are the appalling facts of the drought in Darfur - yet no one, anywhere, is taking any action to help villagers in Darfur.   Villagers from over 40 of the Kids for Kids villages came to see me and all of them had the same story.  In some areas even the grass has failed.   Animals and humans are all at risk.   I have never seen such conditions in the 10 years in which I have been visiting Darfur.  We need to repair as many handpumps as quickly as possible - and to find other ways to help people reach water.   During a private visit to the Wali of North Darfur, Osman Kubir, he told me that unless the international community puts plans into place now many children will suffer severe malnourishment.   Unless a child can reach hospital for treatment he will not survive.   It was shocking to find that, although it is only November, a month which is normally a time of plenty following the harvest, there are already small babies suffering diarrhoea and vomiting - the first signs of serious malnutrition.  I have taken photographs to prove that what I saw is true - there is no one else telling the world what is happening.   It is horrifying that this should happen when security is so much better and at last access to villages is so much better.   Villagers told us that Kids for Kids is making a massive difference - and children in our villages are the most likely to be alright........... If only we could help so many more.
