Internally Displaced Families Arrive in Um Ga’al Village

Many Internally Displaced (IDP) Families who have had to leave their own villages and travel miles across the desert seeking refuge have found their way to Um Ga’al. Um Ga’al, the first village we adopted in 2001, is the furthest north Kids for Kids Village, and the safest right now as conflict continues. One such IDP family is Madiha, her husband Ibrahim and their eight children – three boys and five girls, with three children under the age of five.
In August 2023, Madiha and her family were forced to flee from the area of Abgaw, leaving behind their home and all their belongings. They were living at one of the camps in El Fasher when the violence intensified and grew closer. Therefore, they decided to move once more. Caught between violence and hunger and not sure where to go, they traveled for days seeking refuge in two different towns with no success. In the camp, Madiha’s children were suffering from severe malnutrition, so they left in hopes of better luck finding food and shelter somewhere safer.
After traveling for days they reached Um Ga’al.  Madiha shared with us the “torture and humiliation” they were subjected to and the complete relief they found when they were welcomed into Um Ga’al by the village Sheikh Abdu. The community helped them to build a straw hut of their own, and requested help from Kids for Kids to provide urgent items for recently arrived IDP families.  Kids for Kids was then able to provide food supplies, two blankets, two mosquito nets and a donkey.
Madiha and her family are just one of so many who have been displaced from their homes. Now with inflation out of hand, people cannot afford already expensive basic items. Prices in El Fasher have soared –  1kg of Okra is 7,000 SDG, equivalent to £9 while 1kg of Red Lentils is 15,000 SDG (£18). Kids for Kids must continue to respond with emergency food items, seeds and medicines for people and their animals when we can get them, and other basic essentials when needed.
Madiha and her family have requested additional support of Sacks of Seed (£15 each) to plant for next year’s harvest – millet and sorghum – along with Farm Tools (£30) and Goats (£50+). Can you help Madiha’s family? Thank you.
