As the world marks International Women’s Day, Kids for Kids is celebrating 25 years of transforming the lives of women and children in Darfur, Sudan.
For a quarter of a century, the charity has worked alongside remote villages where families face extreme poverty, drought, and limited access to healthcare or education. At the heart of its work is a belief that empowering women creates lasting change.
“Women are the backbone of their communities,” says founder Patricia Parker. “When women are supported, trained, and trusted with resources, they transform not only their own lives but the future of their children and their villages.”
One of the charity’s most impactful initiatives is goat loans. Women receive goats that provide nutritious milk for their children and a source of income through selling excess milk and by-products. After two years, 5 more goats are passed on to another family, ensuring the benefit spreads throughout the community.
With a reliable source of income, women gain financial independence, confidence, and a stronger voice in household and village decisions.
“Economic freedom is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty,” says Patricia. “When women control resources, they invest in food, education, and healthcare for their families. The impact is felt across entire communities.”
In many villages supported by Kids for Kids, women are also trained as midwives and first aid workers providing lifesaving healthcare in areas where the nearest hospital may be a day’s journey away.
Over the past 25 years, the charity has adopted and supported 110 villages across Darfur, delivering sustainable projects shaped by the needs of the communities themselves.
As the charity celebrates this milestone year, it is also reflecting on the voices that too often go unheard.
“In some of the most remote places in the world, women still face enormous barriers,” Parker says. “But when we listen to them and support their ideas, extraordinary change happens.”
On this International Women’s Day, Kids for Kids is calling on supporters to stand with the women of Darfur and help ensure that their voices continue to be heard for the next 25 years.
“Because when women thrive, communities thrive.”
